Launch Timing Summary

Best Months to Launch

  • April -- After the Spring Sale ends and before Summer event season. Minimal competition from major releases.
  • May -- The last calm period before June's Next Fest and Summer Sale dominate player attention.
  • September -- Post-summer lull with no major sales or Next Fest events until mid-October.

Months to Avoid

  • June -- Next Fest and Summer Sale back-to-back. Wishlists and attention go to demos and discounts, not new paid launches.
  • November - December -- Autumn Sale, Winter Sale, and AAA holiday releases will bury any indie launch.
  • Late February -- Lunar New Year Sale and February Next Fest overlap, causing heavy visibility competition.

Windows to Consider

  • Jan 5 - 25 -- Post-holiday quiet period. Players have fresh gift cards and empty libraries.
  • Apr 6 - 26 -- Three full weeks with no sales, festivals, or major AAA competition.
  • May 4 - 24 -- Last clear runway before the June blockbuster season begins.
  • Sep 7 - 27 -- Clean window between summer and the October Next Fest.

How to Pick Your Steam Launch Date

Practical guidance for choosing a release window that maximizes first-week visibility.

Picking the right launch date is one of the most impactful decisions you will make as an indie developer. Steam's algorithm heavily rewards a strong first week: the number of wishlists that convert to purchases, the volume of concurrent players, and early review velocity all feed into how prominently your game appears on the discovery queue, tag pages, and the "New and Trending" list. A poorly timed launch can cut that crucial first-week visibility in half, regardless of how polished your game is.

Avoid launching during Steam sales. When a major sale is running, the entire storefront is dominated by discounted titles. Players who might have spent $20 on your new release will instead pick up five older games at 75% off. Even worse, the "New and Trending" section gets less attention because shoppers are focused on deal pages. Check the calendar above and ensure your launch date has at least a one-week buffer on either side of any Steam sale.

Steer clear of major AAA release windows. When a title like GTA VI or a major franchise sequel drops, gaming news sites, streamers, and social media become saturated with coverage of that single game. Indie titles struggle to get any press attention during these periods. Look at the orange markers in the calendar and give AAA launches a two-to-three week berth.

Use Next Fest strategically -- but do not launch during it. Steam Next Fest is designed for demos of unreleased games. If you are participating, use it to build wishlists and gather feedback, then plan your actual launch for a few weeks afterward when those wishlists are fresh. Launching the same week as Next Fest means competing with hundreds of free demos for player time.

Weekday versus weekend launches. Most successful indie launches happen on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. This gives you business days to respond to urgent bugs and coordinate with press before the weekend player surge. Launching on a Friday or Saturday means your team is firefighting over the weekend, and journalists are unlikely to cover your game until Monday.

Why Tuesday Launches Work Best

Tuesday has become the de facto standard for game releases, and for good reason. Launching on a Tuesday gives you Monday to handle last-minute build verification and coordinate with your press list. Once the game goes live, you have a full three business days (Tuesday through Thursday) to monitor crash reports, push hotfixes, and respond to early reviews before the weekend influx of players arrives. This means weekend buyers encounter a more stable product, which translates directly into better review scores.

From a visibility standpoint, Steam's "New and Trending" algorithm looks at sales velocity over rolling windows. A Tuesday launch lets you accumulate early adopter sales on Tuesday and Wednesday, building enough momentum to rank well heading into the weekend when overall Steam traffic peaks. If you launched on Saturday instead, you would start competing immediately against peak traffic with zero sales history, making it much harder to surface in discovery feeds.
